Chapter – The Other Side of Zero
Topic : Understanding Addition of Integers
Objective
To help students understand positive and negative integers and practice addition through colouring on grid paper.
Aim
To visualize positive and negative integers and practice addition.
Materials
1. Grid paper
2. Green crayon (for positive integers)
3. Red crayon (for negative integers)
4. Worksheet (Optional)
Pre-requisite Knowledge
Understanding of positive and negative integers, and basic addition.
Activity Steps
1. Take grid paper and colouring materials.
2. Colour positive integers green and negative integers red on the grid paper.
3. Count and calculate the sum of the following integer pairs:
1. +4 and −4
2. −8 and +5
3. +9 and −6
4. −7 and −3
4. Record the sum of each pair on their worksheet.
Observations:
Pair | Calculation | Result |
+4 and -4 | 4 + (-4) | 0 |
-8 and +5 | -8 + 5 | -3 |
+9 and -6 | 9 + (-6) | 3 |
-7 and -3 | -7 + (-3) | -10 |
Result:
Calculate the total sum of the integer pairs accurately.
Conclusion:
This experiment helps visualize positive and negative integers and understand how addition works with them, providing a clearer understanding of integer operations.
