Aim
To compare the rate of seepage of water through clay, sand and gravel.
Materials Required
- 3 plastic bottles or funnels
- Clay
- Sand
- Gravel
- 3 beakers or measuring cups
- Water (equal amount)
- Stopwatch or clock
Procedure
- Take three plastic bottles (or funnels) and label them A (Clay), B (Sand), and C (Gravel).
- Fill each bottle with the same amount of the respective material.
- Place a beaker below each bottle to collect the water.
- Pour the same amount of water into each bottle at the same time.
- Observe how quickly the water comes out and collect it for 5 minutes.
- Compare the amount of water collected in each beaker.

Conclusion
- Water seeps fastest through gravel because it has large spaces between the particles.
- Water seeps moderately through sand because the spaces are smaller.
- Water seeps slowest through clay because its particles are very closely packed.
