Aim:
To show the process of convection in the water with potassium permanganate crystals.
Material Required:
Glass beaker or flask, Water, Potassium permanganate crystals (a few small pieces), spirit lamp, Tripod stand
Procedure:
Fill the beaker about halfway or ¾ full with water.
Carefully add a few potassium permanganate crystals to the bottom of the beaker.
Place the beaker on a tripod stand.
Gently heat the water directly below where the crystals are located, using a small flame from the burner.
Observe the movement of the purple colored solution.
Observation:
You will see streams of the purple-colored water rising upward from the bottom of the beaker.
These colored streams will then spread across the top of the water and sink back down along the sides of the beaker, creating a continuous circulation pattern.
Conclusion:
The liquids conduct heat by the actual movement of particles i.e. by convection.
