Ans – Electric motor
Q. 5-Name one property which forms the basis of grouping of things.
Ans- Shape
B-Short Answer Questions:
Q. 1-What is meant by the term matter?
Ans-Something that occupies space, possess mass and can be felt by one or more of our senses is called matter.
Q. 2-What are insulators? Give one example.
Ans-The substance which do not permit electricity to flow through them are called insulators. For example -PVC, Wood, Rubber etc.
Q. 3-Select the shining materials from the list given below: Glass bowl, Plastic toy, Steel spoon, Cotton shirt.
Ans-Steel spoon.
Q. 4-Silver, Aluminium, and Copper look very different from one another but have a few similar properties. List two such properties.
Ans- (1) They are good conductor of heat.
(2) They are good conductor of electricity.
Q. 5-Which property will you use to classify the following into different groups? Group similar materials together.
Table, Hair oil, Eraser, Water, Carbon dioxide, Milk.
Ans-I will use physical state to classify the following into different groups.
Solid | Liquid | Gas |
Table, Eraser | Hair oil, Milk, Water | Oxygen, Carbon dioxide |
C-LONG ANSWER TYPE QUESTIOS:
Q. 1-Write some common characteristics of materials.
Ans-Some common characteristics of the materials are following-
· All materials occupy space.
· All materials can be felt by one or more of our senses.
· All materials possess mass.
Q. 2-Describe an experiment show that water is a transparent material.
Ans-Take a beaker half-filled with clean water. Put a coin in beaker of water. Place the beaker undisturbed for a few minutes where enough light is present. Now, observe the coin immersed in water from the top of the beaker. We can clearly see the coin immersed in water. This proves that water is a transparent liquid.
(Note: Children can write some other experiments also by themselves. Diagram can be drawn also.)
Q. 3-Name five things which can be made from wood. Also, mention some other materials from which the same things can be made.
Ans-Table, Chair, Almirah, door and toys are the five things which can be made from wood. These things can be made from plastic, iron or aluminium also.
Q. 4-Why are the cooking utensils made of copper or aluminium and their handles of hard plastic?
Ans-Cooking utensils are made of copper or aluminium because they good conductors of heat and hence the food can be cooked easily in them. Their handles of hard plastic because plastic is non conductor of heat due to which the handles do not get heated and we can hold the utensil.
Q. 5-What meant by a magnetic material? Name one magnetic material.
Ans-The materials which are attracted by a magnet are called magnetic materials. Iron is a magnetic material.
D-TICK THE ODD-ONE OUT GIVING REASON
1-Knife, Mirror, Steel plate, Spoon, Water tap
Ans-Mirror because it is a transparent material and rest others are opaque object.
2-Nitrogen, Oil, Air, Steam, Carbon dioxide
Ans-Oil because it is in liquid state and rest others are in gaseous state.
3-Lusture, Silver, Gold, Wood, Copper
Ans-Wood because lustre is a property of rest other materials.
4-Limejuice, Chalk powder, Sulphur, Sand
Ans-Sulphur because it is a substance and rest others are the materials.
5-Acrylic sheet, Ground glass, Glass, Cellophane
Ans-Ground glass because it is a translucent material and rest others are transparent material.
DEFINE THE FOLLOWING TERMS
1-Soluble substance- The materials or substance that dissolve in water are called soluble materials or soluble substance. For example-sugar and salt are the soluble substances.
2-Transparent materials-The materials which allow light to pass through them are called transparent materials. For example-Glass, Acrylic sheet, Air, Water etc.
3-Grouping of objects-The practice of putting together various kinds of different objects which are similar in one or more ways is called grouping of objects. The objects are grouped on the basis of shape, size, colour, texture, taste etc.
4-Magnetic substance-The materials which attracted by a magnet are called magnetic materials. For example-Iron.
HOTS: HIGHER ORDER THINKING SKILLS
Q. 1-Why are the handles of cooking utensils made from bakelite or wood?
Ans-The handles of cooking utensils are made from bakelite or wood because they are non- conductor of heat due to which the handles do not get heated and we are able to hold the utensils with their help.
Q. 2-Materials which can be compressed are said to be soft whereas those cannot be compressed are said to be hard. Explain.
Ans-Materials which can be compressed are said to be soft because molecules of soft materials are loosely packed therefore they can be compressed easily whereas those cannot be compressed are said to be hard because their molecules are tightly packed.
Q. 3-We quite often use three terms -Matter, Material and Substance. Do all of these are same or different? If different, how do these differ from one another?
Ans-These terms describe a gradation from general to particular.
· Matter is something that occupies space and possess mass. The term matter is used for generalisation.
· Material is a specific sample of matter. For example-Plastic.
· Substance is a more specific term. It refers to either a pure chemical element or compound. For example-Iron, Water etc.
Q. 4-Why is water called universal solvent?
Ans- Water can dissolve a large number of many different kinds of substance. That is why water is considered a universal solvent.
Q. 5-Matter exists in three physical forms-solid, liquid, gas. In which state the force of attraction between the molecules is (a) strongest (b) weakest?
Ans-(a) In solid state the force of attraction between the molecules is strongest.
(b)In gaseous state the force of attraction between the molecules is weakest.
