Practical - 1 & 2 : Electromagnet

Aim:

To show that when an electric current is passed through a wire, it behaves like a magnet.

Materials Required:

A dry cell (battery), a key (switch), Connecting wires, a long straight piece of copper wire, a small magnetic compass

Procedure:

1) Take a straight copper wire and connect it to a battery and a key (switch) in series.

2) Place a small magnetic compass just below the wire.

3) Note the initial position of the compass needle when no current is flowing.

4) Now, close the key to allow current to flow through the wire.

5) Observe the movement of the compass needle.

6) Open the key again and observe whether the compass needle returns to its original position.

Observation:

When the current flows through the wire, the compass needle deflects, showing that a magnetic field is produced around the wire.

Result:

It is proved that when an electric current passes through a wire, it behaves like a magnet.
