Body Movements (By Dharmendra Sir)

VERY SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS:

Q. 1- When you agree or disagree with someone you shake your head. What is this shaking called?

Ans. Movement of head

Q. 2- What type of joint is between shoulder and upper arm?

Ans. Ball and socket joint

Q. 3- Which part of the skeletal system protects the brain?

Ans. Skull

Q. 4- Which organs are protected by the cage formed by the chest bones?

Ans. Lungs and heart

Q. 5- Name the organs used by fish for swimming?

Ans. Fins and tail

SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS:

Q. 1- What is meant by joints in our body? How are bones held together at joints?

Ans. The locations in our body where two or more bones are joined called bone joint or simply as joints. At joints, the bones are held together by ligament.

Q. 2- What is gliding joint? Where is such a joint found in our body?

Ans. The joint which allows only a limited movement due to sliding nature of cartilages is called gliding joint. Such a joint is found in backbone.

Q. 3- How does locomotion differ from movement?

Ans. The movement of an organism bodily from one place to another is called locomotion whereas a change in the position of any part of the body with respect to its axis is called movement.

Q. 4- What are the functions of biceps and triceps?

Ans. Biceps and triceps help in the flexing of arm. When the arm is moved up, the biceps contracts and becomes shorter, and triceps expands. When the arm is straightened or extended, the triceps contracts while the biceps expands.

Q. 5- List two adaptations in birds which help them to fly.

Ans. (1) The bones of birds are hollow and light in weight.

          (2) The bony parts of the forelimbs are modified as wings.

LONG ANSWER TYPE QUESTIONS:

Q. 1- Describe the hip bone.

Ans. The hip bone is formed by the fusion of three bones. The hip bones together with the hip and the tail parts of the backbone form a large bony bowl, called pelvis.

Q. 2- Mention the functions of the skeletal system.

Ans. The skeletal system has the following functions:

It forms the framework of the body.

It helps to protect and keep the delicate organs of the body in their proper positions.

It provides support and gives shape to the body.

It helps in the movement of the various parts of the body with help of muscles.

Q. 3- Describe the backbone of the human body with the help of a well labelled diagram.

Ans. Thee backbone or spine runs from the base of the skull to the hip. It consists of 33 small ring- like vertebrae joined end to end. The first 24 vertebrae are joined serially by elastic like cartilage. The main nerve cord passes through the hollow bony-tube formed by the vertebrae. The 9 vertebrae of hip and tail are fused together and inseparable. The backbone is divided into five regions.

1.Head 2. Chest 3. Belly 4. Hip 6. Tail

Q. 4- What is difference between normal foot and flat foot?

Ans.

Normal Foot

Flat Foot

In a normal foot, the bones are set to form an arch like arrangement. The feet arches provide good support to the body.

In a flat foot, the bones are not arched. Some people with flat foot feel pain.

Q.
5- Draw labelled diagrams showing the movement of arms.

Ans.

 Q. 6- How do birds fly?

Ans. Birds fly in the air by spreading their wings. They use their chest muscles to flap their wings. The body of birds is streamlined and suitable for flying. Their bones are hollow and light in weight. The bony parts of the forelimbs are modified as wings.

DEFINE THE FOLLOWING TERMS

1.Body movement- A change in the position of any part of the body with respect to its axis is called movement. For example, when we agree or disagree with someone, you shake your head. This shaking of head is called movement of head.

2. Ligament-Strong flexible bands of connective tissues holding the bones together.

3. Skeletal System- Skeletal system is the framework of bones and cartilage that supports the body of humans and animals.

4. Cartilage-Cartilage is strong, flexible connective tissue. It is not as hard the bones and can be bent. It is present on the tip of bones, ear pinnae, nose and trachea etc.

Q. 1- What would have happened if the backbone had only one long bone instead of many vertebrae?

Ans. If the backbone had only one long bone instead of many vertebrae we were not able to bend down or backwards and we would be sitting straight.

Q. 2- Name the bone in the human body which is not connected to the any other bone. Where is this bone located in the body?

Ans. The only bone in the human body which is not connected to the any other bone is hyoid bone. This bone is located at the root of the tongue in the neck region.

Q. 3- Why X-rays are used for examining any fracture/dislocation in bones?

Ans. X-rays are used for examining any fracture/dislocation in bones because X-rays cannot pass through bones and it takes images of bones on photographic paper.
